True Beauty

Synopsis

After years of bullying over her looks, Lim Ju Gyeong develops a deep insecurity about her face. When she transfers to a new high school, she decides to start over.

She teaches herself makeup through online tutorials and transforms her appearance. The change makes her suddenly popular, but it also traps her in a constant effort to keep her bare face hidden from everyone around her.

At her new school, she begins to build real friendships and a fragile confidence. She also grows close to Lee Su Ho, the most admired boy at school and the only one who has seen her without makeup. He acts distant because of a painful past, but he treats her with unexpected care as they share secrets and feelings. Her life becomes more complicated when Han Seo Jun enters the picture, a rebellious classmate with a softer side, pulling her into a tense love triangle.

With her secret always at risk of being exposed, Ju Gyeong must decide who to trust, who to love, and whether she can accept herself beyond the image she created.

The 2MLs one sided love is patient, sincere, and emotionally poignant. While he never becomes true endgame competition, his arc is given substantial focus and sympathy

My Notes / Opinions

This is a very trope forward, manhwa style high school romance that knows exactly what lane it is in and mostly stays there. The romantic arc is straightforward and easy to follow, with the female lead’s journey toward self acceptance acting as the backbone of both the story and the relationship.

Once the couple is established, the relationship is generally supportive and emotionally healthy, with a focus on communication and mutual care. However, the drama leans heavily on familiar separation and reunion beats late in the story, which feel more manufactured than necessary. The love triangle adds emotional weight but also stretches on longer than it needs to, occasionally pulling focus away from the central relationship.
