The Forbidden Marriage

Synopsis

Seven years after the death of his wife, King Lee Heon remains locked in mourning. His refusal to remarry results in a nationwide ban that prevents single women from marrying. Public frustration grows as the years pass without change.

Ye So Rang lives by deception, posing as a woman who can read signs and spirits. After her arrest, she invents a bold lie to escape punishment. She claims the spirit of the late queen still resides within the palace.

This claim brings her before the king himself. To survive, So Rang pretends to become possessed by the queen and speaks in her voice. As her performance continues, she becomes deeply entangled in palace affairs and the king’s unresolved grief. What begins as a calculated scam slowly reshapes both their lives.

Triangle Details

The 2ML has major history and emotional weight with the FL, and his presence keeps pressing on the main pairing for a long stretch. A lot of the triangle frustration comes from how much space the 2ML takes up even after things should be clear to him.

My Notes / Opinions

This one starts off messy but the king’s scenes are consistently the funniest and most watchable part early on, and the show isn’t afraid to mix comedy with some genuinely dark imagery. The biggest ongoing headache is how often outside forces and the 2ML’s presence crowd the main romance, plus the late stretch can feel like nonstop “one more thing” plot pressure without much room to breathe. Still, when the drama lets the main couple have space, the romance is genuinely strong and frequently lands, and the final wrap up delivers a satisfying end state for the couple. Same ML, and he’s equally as good, as in Shooting Stars.
