My Roommate is a Gumiho

Synopsis

Shin Woo Yeo appears to be a calm and intelligent professor, but he is actually a nine tailed fox who has lived for nearly a thousand years. He is on the verge of becoming human by storing human energy inside a magical bead.

Lee Dam is a straightforward university student with no experience in romance. One night, a small accident causes her to accidentally swallow Woo Yeo’s bead. The bead cannot remain inside a human body for more than one year. If it breaks, Lee Dam will die and Woo Yeo will lose his only chance to become human.

With no other option, Woo Yeo explains the situation and suggests they live together while searching for a solution. Their forced cohabitation leads to constant friction, unexpected closeness, and growing feelings. As the deadline approaches, both must face the cost of their choices and what they are willing to sacrifice for love and survival.

Triangle Details

The triangle is heavily overused and often feels forced. The 2ML is involved far longer than necessary, repeatedly given false hope through misunderstandings, supernatural manipulation, and the FL’s indecisiveness. This becomes one of the most infuriating parts of the drama for me.

My Notes / Opinions

This was mostly a “pass the time” type of drama for me. I skipped a lot early on, and for a long stretch it felt like the show was spinning its wheels. The MLs acting is very flat, which I get is part of the character, but it made it harder to stay emotionally invested. The FL, on the other hand, was extremely frustrating for much of the run. Constantly denying her feelings, leaning on the 2ML as an escape, and then reversing course five minutes later made the romance exhausting to watch.

The biggest issue is how long the drama relies on misunderstandings, triangle bait, and supernatural plot devices to delay progress. The fate binding thread and dream manipulation arc nearly made me scream. It felt like pure, genuine ragebait and completely killed momentum at points.

That said, once the triangle is finally cut off for good and the supernatural interference stops dominating everything (around episode 14), the show genuinely improves. Episodes 14 to 16 are easily the best stretch of the drama. The main couple finally works, the second couple becomes likable, and the ending itself is nice and satisfying.

Was it worth the stress? Questionable. But the final arc and ending do land, even if it took way too long and cost me several years of my life in the process.
